The story

Born in Italy, Modotti moved through the United States before settling in Mexico with Edward Weston. There she developed a photography attentive to objects, architecture and work within a milieu of artistic and political exchange. Her communist commitment shaped her career and relationship with subjects. Her practice combines precise composition and social concerns, neither of which can be simply separated from the other when reading the images.

Understanding the work

Observe how ordinary objects become political signs through association and framing. Then return to their material qualities, rather than reading only an abstract emblem.

Key works and series
