The story

As a photographer, editor and gallery organiser, Stieglitz championed photography’s artistic standing in the United States. He developed his own images alongside his work promoting photography, notably through Camera Work and the 291 gallery. His subjects range from the modern city to portraits and clouds. His career connects the history of forms with that of institutions: a body of work also exists through the places, publications and debates that make it visible.

Understanding the work

Compare the urban scenes with the cloud images. A photograph can describe a subject while also arranging forms that carry a personal expression.
