Architecture & social relationships

Thomas Struth

Born in 1954 · Germany

Looking at places, then at those who look at them.

The story

Thomas Struth began with urban views and developed family portraits, museum scenes and photographs of technological spaces. Trained in Düsseldorf, he maintains an attention to the organisation of the frame and relationships between people. His Museum Photographs stage a double gaze: that of visitors looking at artworks and that of the viewer looking at the photograph.

Understanding the work

Follow the lines of a building, then the positions of people. In a museum, compare gestures of looking with the compositions of the artworks visible in the frame.
