The story

Francis Frith travelled to Egypt and the Near East in the 1850s with wet-collodion equipment. His images of monuments found success alongside the growth of his publishing business. The firm later produced numerous views of towns and landscapes, also made by other photographers. Attribution therefore needs to distinguish the photographer from the company that distributed the image.

Understanding the work

Read the placement of figures, shadows and ruins within the frame. A monumental view also reveals how the traveller constructs an experience of place.

Key works and series

Egypt and Palestine Photographed and Described; pyramids; British topographical views.
