Sebastião Salgado

1944–2025 · Brazil / France

Connecting human destinies and landscapes.

The story

Trained in economics, Sebastião Salgado undertook extensive photographic projects around the world. Work, migration and human crises occupied a central place, followed by growing attention to ecosystems and their inhabitants. His books and exhibitions were developed with Lélia Wanick Salgado. The images’ formal power helped them circulate, but also prompted discussion about how suffering and inequality are represented.

Understanding the work

Connect spectacular compositions with captions and specific histories. The scale of a landscape or a crowd amplifies the narrative, but can also push individual experiences into the background.

Key works and series
