Landscape & environment

Robert Adams

Born in 1937 · United States

What remains of the landscape as the city expands.

The story

Robert Adams turned to photography after studying literature. He observes transformations in the American West, particularly urban edges, roads and residential areas. The New West and his participation in New Topographics helped renew ways of looking at landscape. His images and writings hold environmental degradation together with attention to the beauty that can still be perceived.

Understanding the work

Look at traces of development without forgetting the light, trees and horizon. A frame can hold both a critique of the landscape and an attachment to a place.

Key works and series
