Rinko Kawauchi
Born in 1972 · Japan
Small perceptions connected with the cycles of life.
The story
Rinko Kawauchi became known through several books published in 2001, including Utatane. She photographs gestures, animals, objects and phenomena of light, then organises these images into sequences. Illuminance, Ametsuchi and Halo extend the links between everyday life and the natural world. The book does not simply collect beautiful isolated images: it offers transitions, rhythms and changes of scale.
Understanding the work
Look for forms and light that recur from page to page. A small scene can take on another meaning when it responds to a landscape or natural phenomenon.
