Architecture & modernity

Lucia Moholy

1894–1989 · Prague / Germany / United Kingdom

Making modern architecture and its objects legible.

The story

Lucia Moholy photographed the buildings, objects and people of the Bauhaus. These images helped spread knowledge of the school internationally, although her authorship was long insufficiently acknowledged. After leaving Germany, she continued working in portraiture and architecture in England, among other fields. Her career reminds us that constructing the memory of a movement also depends on the precise work of those who photograph it.

Understanding the work

Compare the clarity of objects with the dynamics of architectural views. Shadows, transparency and camera angles show how photography interprets a building.
