Making room for silence.

In Hengki Koentjoro’s photographs, water and air become expressive surfaces. Greys matter as much as blacks; a line, a tree or a figure establishes scale. These four series offer ways into his official portfolio.

01

Waterscape

Follow horizons and reflections as water emerges and familiar landmarks fade.

02

MiniM

Read the space around forms. What little remains in the frame becomes essential.

03

Underwater

Discover a different light beneath the surface, and a new sense of depth.

04

Noir

Observe how dark masses and gradations of grey build the image.

The story

Hengki Koentjoro was born in Semarang and trained at the Brooks Institute in California. Returning to Indonesia, he worked in video and developed a personal black-and-white photographic practice. Landscapes, water, silhouettes and underwater views form a world attentive to sparsely occupied spaces and tonal transitions. His series connect the experience of landscape with an exploration of forms and textures.

Understanding the work

Look at the tonal nuances before identifying the subject. A silhouette or horizon line may be enough to change the scale of an almost empty image.
