Fashion & storytelling

Guy Bourdin

1928–1991 · France

Fashion images as visual riddles.

The story

Guy Bourdin worked for Vogue and in advertising, particularly fashion and accessories. His work uses unexpected framing, intense colours and fragmentary narratives. Bodies may be partly outside the frame, while objects carry a dramatic role. Influenced by Surrealism, he gave commercial photography a narrative independence extending beyond the simple presentation of a product.

Understanding the work

Look for what the frame leaves out and how a colour draws the eye. The image sometimes seems extracted from a story whose other scenes are missing.
