The story

Henry Peach Robinson championed an artistic photography based on composition, pose and narrative. He sometimes assembled several negatives into a single image, as in Fading Away. His writings and works contributed to nineteenth-century debates about photography’s relationship with the fine arts. His work shows that constructed images did not have to wait for digital tools.

Understanding the work

Look for relationships between characters, the directions of their gazes and the light. The scene must read as a whole, even when it is made from separate elements.
