Modernisms & reportage

Germaine Krull

1897–1985 · Germany / Netherlands / France

Modernity seen at an angle.

The story

Krull developed a body of work combining modernist experimentation, portraits and published photography. Her portfolio Métal explores bridges, machines and industrial architecture through framing that fragments their structures. Her career and travels also led her towards more varied documentary practices. Reading her work means holding together the freedom of image construction, social subjects and the conditions of circulation in books and magazines.

Understanding the work

Follow diagonals, cropped structures and changes of scale. The frame does not always present an entire building: it can turn an industrial fragment into a visual event in its own right.

Key works and series
