Spaces & systems

Andreas Gursky

Born in 1955 · Germany

Making the structures of the contemporary world visible.

The story

Trained in the context of the Düsseldorf School, Andreas Gursky photographs vast spaces, architecture and collective activities. His often monumental images allow the viewer to move from an overall arrangement to a multitude of details. Digital processing and construction are part of this approach. Shops, crowds and landscapes become places in which to observe rhythms, systems and relationships of scale.

Understanding the work

Alternate between a distant view and close reading. Look for accumulation, pattern and the construction of the image.
