Sergio Larrain
1931–2012 · Chile
Finding the city in its passages.
The story
Sergio Larrain photographed the streets, children and architecture of Chile before working for Magnum. His work is also connected with London and his travels. He favoured oblique framing, low viewpoints and unexpected relationships between planes. He later largely withdrew from professional photography for a life focused on meditation, writing and painting, while retaining an attention to the visible world.
Understanding the work
Look at thresholds, staircases and silhouettes that guide the eye into depth. Unusual angles give movements and encounters their uncertain character, beyond a simple framing effect.
Key works and series
