The story
Marion Post Wolcott worked in the press before joining the Farm Security Administration in 1938. She travelled across the United States, describing living conditions, work, celebrations and social contrasts. Her work includes black-and-white negatives and colour transparencies. Her travels and the diversity of her subjects move beyond an exclusively bleak reading of the Depression years.
Understanding the work
Read relationships between groups rather than focusing only on the main figure. A sign, a garment or the layout of a room can reveal the social structure of a place.
Key works and series
Snowy Night, Woodstock; scenes of the South; FSA colour photographs.
