Street photography & everyday life

Sabine Weiss

1924–2021 · Switzerland / France

The encounter as a way of photographing.

The story

Trained in Switzerland, Weiss settled in Paris after the war and built a career combining commissions with personal exploration. Fashion, advertising, illustration and reportage coexist with her street scenes and portraits. Her photography is often associated with humanism, but that label cannot encompass the variety of its uses. Light, movement and closeness to people create continuity between very different subjects and contexts.

Understanding the work

Compare personal images with commissions: a shared attentiveness can run across genres. Observe night lighting and gestures without reducing every scene to an illustration of tenderness.
