Robert Frank

1924–2019 · Switzerland / United States

Unsettling the American narrative.

The story

Born in Zurich, Robert Frank settled in the United States after the war. He travelled across the country and brought together in Les Américains a vision marked by social divisions, solitude and everyday signs. The book transformed ways of telling the story of a society through sequences. He went on to develop a personal photographic and cinematic practice in which memories and loved ones play an essential role.

Understanding the work

Follow motifs that pass from one image to another: flags, cars and windows. Meaning arises as much from relationships between photographs as from each image on its own.
