Street photography & everyday life

Robert Doisneau

1912–1994 · France

Social life in a detail.

The story

Doisneau worked in industrial photography, the press and commissioned projects before becoming widely associated with the streets of Paris and its suburbs. He observed trades, leisure, children and encounters with a sense of narrative and humour. His work includes both captured scenes and arranged situations. The distinction matters: an image’s emotional effect does not, by itself, tell us how the scene was produced.

Understanding the work

Observe the setting and exchanges between figures, then investigate how the image was made. A photograph can be both moving and constructed; recognising its staging enriches rather than diminishes its reading.

Key works and series

Le Baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville; trades; the Paris suburbs; reportage.
