Black and white

The city between snow, silence and presence.

The story

Phil Penman, born in the United Kingdom and based in New York, photographs the street in black and white. Following a career in reportage and celebrity photography, he developed an eye attentive to urban life, weather and silhouettes. His books Street, New York Street Diaries and Street Scenes extend this exploration. His images of September 11 and New York’s lockdown belong to another, documentary dimension of his work.

Understanding the work

Backlighting, mist and snow isolate figures. Look at how a silhouette gives façades a human scale and how the weather reorganises the frame.
