Documentary & portraiture

Martine Franck

1938–2012 · Belgium / France

Making room for gestures and connections.

The story

After studying art history and working as an assistant, Martine Franck developed an independent practice of portraiture and reportage. She followed the Théâtre du Soleil and photographed artists, older people and communities. A co-founder of Viva and later a Magnum member, she developed an eye attentive to exchanges between generations. Her commitment continued through the creation of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson and the transmission of photographic heritage.

Understanding the work

Look at relationships rather than individuals alone. A gesture, a distance or a line in the setting can hold several people together and give a simple situation its delicacy.

Key works and series

The Théâtre du Soleil; portraits; Le Brusc; old age and Tibetan communities.
