Colour & street photography

Joel Meyerowitz

Born in 1938 · United States

From the energy of the street to the time of the landscape.

The story

Joel Meyerowitz began on the street and helped develop a language of colour photography. His work evolved from a small, mobile camera towards large-format projects, notably on Cape Cod. Changes in light take on a different rhythm. He also documented the World Trade Center site after 2001, combining observation of the clearance work with the memory of a devastated place and its transformations.

Understanding the work

Compare the rhythm of the street with the stillness of landscapes. Colour can isolate a fleeting gesture, but it can also convey changing light without any spectacular event.
