Cinematic staging

Gregory Crewdson

Born in 1962 · United States

The quiet strangeness of ordinary spaces.

The story

Gregory Crewdson constructs photographs of American small towns and interiors using production methods close to cinema. Crews, lighting and meticulous preparation contribute to suspended scenes. The characters often appear absorbed or distant from one another. The work does not deliver a complete narrative: it leaves the viewer to imagine what came before and what might follow.

Understanding the work

Identify light sources, thresholds and distances between bodies. Empty areas often play as important a role as the characters.

Key works and series

Twilight; Beneath the Roses; Cathedral of the Pines.
