Street photography & everyday life

Garry Winogrand

1928–1984 · United States

Apparent disorder as a question.

The story

Winogrand photographed American streets, gatherings and leisure activities with an energy that sometimes makes the frame unstable. He also worked in the press and advertising before teaching. His images do not promise a complete explanation of the scene: several actions and glances coexist, sometimes without any obvious connection. This density turns the document into an open question about public life and the limits of photographic description itself.

Understanding the work

Explore the whole surface before choosing a central subject. The tilt and simultaneous gestures may create an impression of chance while maintaining very precise visual relationships.
