Chris Killip

1946–2020 · Isle of Man / United Kingdom

Staying close to people in a changing world.

The story

Chris Killip photographed the Isle of Man and then communities in northern England. His series describe workplaces, leisure and the effects of deindustrialisation without reducing people to those circumstances. In Flagrante, published in 1988, brings together a major part of this work. Seacoal and Skinningrove show the importance of time, proximity and knowledge of place.

Understanding the work

Look at bodies in relation to the ground, machines and other people. The sequence makes it possible to move beyond the iconic status of a single photograph.
