Alan Schaller
Contemporary photographer · United Kingdom
The human figure on the scale of the metropolis.
The story
London-based photographer Alan Schaller works mainly in urban settings and in black and white. His compositions draw on contrast, geometry and the place of people within their surroundings. His practice also includes commissions and collective initiatives, including Street Photography International and Irys. His work offers a way of approaching the city as a system of forms as well as a lived space.
Understanding the work
Compare the deep blacks with the illuminated areas. Notice how distance and the small scale of a person transform a street scene into an almost abstract composition.
