Everyday life & experimentation

Wolfgang Tillmans

Born in 1968 · Germany / United Kingdom

Bringing images into relation, without a fixed hierarchy.

The story

Wolfgang Tillmans photographs people, living spaces, objects and the cultures in which he participates. He also explores the abstract possibilities of paper, light and the darkroom. Installation and differences of format are part of his work: a photograph’s reading can change in contact with another. His groups of images connect intimate life, perception and collective questions.

Understanding the work

Observe adjacencies and changes of scale. Moving from everyday detail to abstraction reveals the same attention to surfaces and relationships.
