Photojournalism

Robert Capa

1913–1954 · Hungary / United States

Close to history.

The story

Born Endre Friedmann in Budapest, Capa worked in the illustrated press, covering the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War and Indochina, among other conflicts. His career is intertwined with Gerda Taro and the construction of an identity as a photojournalist. He played a leading role in founding Magnum in 1947. His images combine proximity to events with attention to people, while their circulation helped shape collective memories of conflict.

Understanding the work

Read movement, what lies outside the frame and the conditions of photography. A war photograph remains a situated fragment; it cannot sum up a conflict or the experience of all its victims.

Key works and series

Spanish Civil War; Normandy landings; war reportage.
