Portraiture & the passage of time

Rineke Dijkstra

Born in 1959 · Netherlands

The portrait at a moment of change.

The story

Rineke Dijkstra photographs subjects including adolescents on beaches, young mothers and people followed over several years. A frontal, relatively spare approach directs attention towards posture, expression and signs of transition. The Almerisa series allows the same person to be compared at different moments in her life. Repetition reveals changes without claiming to explain them completely.

Understanding the work

Compare the balance of the body, hands and gaze. In long-term series, distinguish changes in the person from changes in the photographic setup.
