Philip Jones Griffiths

1936–2008 · United Kingdom

Describing war through its human consequences.

The story

Originally a pharmacist, Philip Jones Griffiths became a press photographer and worked extensively in Vietnam. Vietnam Inc. combines his images with a critical argument about the war and its consequences for the population. A Magnum member, he continued a long-term observation of Asia and returned to the traces of conflict. Reportage becomes an investigation in which everyday details complement the immediately dramatic scenes.

Understanding the work

Examine relationships between civilians, soldiers and their surroundings. Read the texts alongside the images: accumulating ordinary situations reveals a system beyond the battle or spectacular event alone.
