Diary & portraiture

Nobuyoshi Araki

Born in 1940 · Japan

Photography as a continuous diary.

The story

Nobuyoshi Araki has developed a body of work in which the city, flowers, loved ones and the body intersect. Books occupy a major place in a practice often structured as a diary. Sentimental Journey and images of his wife Yoko bring together personal life and an awareness of loss. His work also includes explicit photographs and has prompted debates about representation and relationships with models.

Understanding the work

Read dates, captions and the order of images. Distinguish autobiography from staging; questions of consent and representation remain necessary to a critical reading of the work.

Key works and series

Sentimental Journey; Winter Journey; flowers and views of Tokyo.
