Marc Riboud
1923–2016 · France
Moving through the world with attention.
The story
Marc Riboud left engineering for photography and joined Magnum in the 1950s. He travelled extensively in Asia, observing social change, work and everyday life. His visits to Vietnam went beyond the front line. The Eiffel Tower painter and the protester holding a flower convey individual gestures set within larger spaces and events.
Understanding the work
Follow a figure’s position in the composition. Lines can be carefully constructed without erasing the fragility of a gesture or the political and social context of the scene.
Key works and series
Le Peintre de la tour Eiffel; La Fille à la fleur; China and Vietnam.
