Time & perception

Hiroshi Sugimoto

Born in 1948 · Japan

Giving time a form.

The story

Hiroshi Sugimoto organises his work into series exploring duration and perception. Museum dioramas, cinemas and sea horizons become devices for observation. Long exposures and changes in sharpness are more than a style: they alter what the camera records. Architecture, objects and installations extend this exploration of the forms of visual experience and the relationship between reality and photographic representation.

Understanding the work

Compare the actual exposure time with the instant the image seems to show. The series follow simple rules whose variations allow us to experience time, scale and the uncertainties of perception.
