Gerda Taro

1910–1937 · Germany / France

A distinctive voice in war reportage.

The story

Born Gerta Pohorylle, Taro fled Nazi Germany and settled in Paris, where she met Robert Capa. She photographed the Spanish Civil War alongside the Republicans and developed her own approach to reportage. Her death during the conflict cut short a brief career. Archival study has helped distinguish her work within collections long associated with Capa, reminding us how attribution shapes the history and recognition of photojournalism.

Understanding the work

Consider the series, captions and attribution rather than a single heroic image. Choices of distance and moment reveal an engaged witness’s position without cancelling the constraints of working in the field.
