The body & space

Francesca Woodman

1958–1981 · United States

Turning presence into apparition.

The story

From a very young age, Francesca Woodman created work centred on relationships between body and space. Her studies and stays in the United States and Italy informed a practice in which she often appeared herself alongside other models. Blur, movement and architectural fragments shift the boundary between presence and disappearance. The photographs are formal and sensory experiments that should not be reduced to the end of her life.

Understanding the work

Observe the body’s contact with walls and objects. Movement and fragmented framing raise questions of visibility; they are not merely clues to a personal mystery or a biographical reading.
