Don McCullin
Born in 1935 · United Kingdom
Looking at the consequences of violence.
The story
Don McCullin began in working-class London before working for the press and covering numerous conflicts. His work also documents poverty, British industrial life and English landscapes. War images form part of a larger body of work marked by suffering, dignity and a sense of loss. Black and white and the printing process contribute to this personal expression.
Understanding the work
Place each image in its historical context. Compare conflict scenes with industrial views and landscapes: dark light connects them, but their circumstances are not interchangeable.
