Portraiture, archives & the book

Dayanita Singh

Born in 1961 · India

Making the book and the archive into living forms.

The story

Trained in Ahmedabad and then at the International Center of Photography, Dayanita Singh developed portraits and observations of Indian society. She also explores empty spaces, workplaces and archives. The book and forms of display occupy a central place in her practice. Her images can be rearranged, juxtaposed and reread, giving several lives to a single photographic body of work.

Understanding the work

Examine the sequence and how the images are displayed. A change of neighbours can turn an isolated document into a fragment of memory or the beginning of a narrative.
